Chinese New Year Chopsticks

Chopsticks for Kids

Celebrate the Chinese New Year with chopsticks. Chopsticks can be tricky for young kids developing fine motor skills, so grab a rubber band and some scrap paper and make them a little easier to use.

Wrap a rubber band around the top of both chopsticks.

Fold a piece of paper a few times and wedge it between the chopsticks,
near the rubber band.

Now you have created a spring-like chopstick.

I got this idea from a local restaurant, Mongolian BBQ in St. George, Utah. Visit them for great food and a fun experience. My kids love the origami animals they make for them when we visit.

Enjoy!

Pioneer Park

Pioneer Park
Red Hills Parkway, St. George, Utah

I recently took my 4 & 6 year old hiking at Pioneer Park. It is a fun and easy hike for anyone. You also get an amazing view of the city.

We packed a lunch and the kids found a rock outcropping they said was a perfect hideout to eat it in.

Pioneer Park is located on Red Hills Parkway in St. George. Look for the big "DIXIE" painted in white on the red rock and you will find it.

Princess & Characters

Princess & Character Visits

My daughter loves Snow White and we wanted to make her birthday extra special, so we hired Snow White from Princess & Character Visits to make a special appearance at her birthday party.

St. George Mom's daughter with Snow White

The Princess took pictures with the girls, taught them how to curtsy and some proper etiquette. Then we sang “Happy Birthday” and blew out the candles. She played a fun game with the girls similar to Hot Potato, but using an apple. The person holding the apple when the music stopped had to pretend to bite the apple and dramatically faint and sleep until the game was over.

The Princesses!
My daughter loved her visit. My son has attended a birthday part where Spider Man made an appearance. Lots of fun! Call 435-773-2790 and learn more the characters they have and the packages they offer. Follow Princess Character Visits on Facebook.

Free Preschool

Free At-Home Preschool Program

The UPSTART program (Utah Preparing Students Today for A Rewarding Tomorrow) is a Utah state-funded, computer-based preschool program that will prepare your 4-year-old for kindergarten with a fun start in reading, math, and science in just 15 minutes a day. Brought to you by the Waterford Institute. The best part is that it is all FREE!

St. George Mom's son at Upstart graduation
My son participated in this program and began to read words before he started kindergarten. You are given all the equipment and you may even qualify for the use of a free computer and Internet service. The program advances when your child demonstrates proficiency, so no waiting for other kids to catch up. You do have to be committed to at least 15 minutes a day – 5 days a week, but you can call and tell them if you are going out of town or if your child missed a day because of an illness (or they will call you). I have already pre-registered my daughter for this fall. There are limited openings so call 800-669-4533 or go on-line to www.UtahUpstart.org

LEGO League

First LEGO League Regional Qualifier

February 12, 2013

FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO® League (FLL) is an exciting, fun global robotics and innovation program that ignites an enthusiasm for discovery, science, teamwork and technology in kids ages 9 to 14. Students have the opportunity to solve real-world challenges by building LEGO-based robots.
Here is the bad news, team registration for this year’s competition is now closed. So why am I telling you about it? The public is invited to view part of the competition from Noon-1:15pm. Take your kids and get them excited. While you are there you can learn more about the program. If you can't make it to the event, then visit University of Utah Technology Venture Development.

Elementary and middle-school students get to:

Design, build and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology
Apply real-world math and science concepts
Research challenges facing today’s scientists
Learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills
Participate in tournaments and celebrations
What FLL teams accomplish is nothing short of amazing. It's fun. It’s exciting. And the skills they learn will last a lifetime.

In the 2012 Senior Solutions Challenge, over 200,000 children ages 9-14 (9-16 outside US, Canada and Mexico) from more than 60 countries will explore aging and how it may affect a person's lifestyle.

Teams research obstacles and then suggest ways to improve the quality of life for the seniors affected. Teams also build, test and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® robot to solve missions on an obstacle course.

The FIRST Lego League regional qualifier event will be held at Sunrise Ridge Intermediate School located at 3167 S. 2350 E. in St. George, Utah.
